owl cable hat

i've gotten so many requests for the matching hat pattern, so here it is.

hopefully it is right. i'm doing it from my brain....which tends to be a jumbled mess after giving birth....who am i kidding? it's always a jumbled mess. take it for what it is worth. no testing has been done.

Gauge 4.75 spi and 6 rows per inch
Needle #8, 16" and DPNs
Yarn: Worsted-Aran.
Final Sizes:
Newborn 12.6" around

Instructions:

CO 61
Join by knitting the first stitch, slipping last CO stitch over it, essentially binding off. You will end with 60 Knit in stockinette for 3" to get the rolled edge.

R1: knit
R2: *P3, K4, P3 repeat from * to end
R3: *P1, C4B, C4F, P1 repeat from * to end
R4-11: *P1, K8, P1 repeat from * to end
R12: *P1, C4B, C4F, P1 repeat from * to end
R13-16: *P1, K8, P1 repeat from * to end
R17: *P1, C4B, C4F, P1 repeat from * to end
R18: *P1, K8, P1 repeat from * to end

knit 1" in stockinette,

Next Round: k4, *pm, k12 from * four times, k6
(hypothetically, in said jumbled brain, this lines up dead center between the owls. remember, said brain is jumbled. i could be wrong. this is totally, and rather likely wrong. Match it up before you start decreasing and drop me a line in the comments. I'd greatly appreciate it...but only if your brain is clearer then mine!)

Begin decreasing.

Decreases
Rounds start two stitches before first marker. I suggest making your starting marker a different color to avoid confusion.

Round 1: *k2tog, sm, ssk* knit to two before next marker and repeat all the way around.
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: *k2tog, sm, ssk* knit to two before next marker and repeat all the way around.

Repeat rounds two and three until there are only two stitches between each marker.

Break yarn, thread through final stitches.

Weave in and enjoy.

finally got around to making one of these. on the decreases, I found I was already, at the start of the round, directly in between owls. so I did that set-up round placing markers every 12, without doing the k4 first or the k6 after, since you are already there.
make sense?
I'll be putting it up on Rav soon. I don't know why I keep making these with variegated yarn. I'm sure solid would look better.

I'm gonna try to make this but I'd like to make it a little bigger than newborn. How many should stitches should I cast on, etc? I've bought some tiny baby buttons to sew on for the owl's eyes.

the pm is wrong... it should be k5, then pm every 10 stitches.... cute pattern!

bikrambody said...

sorry, i just realized you said "in between" the owls and not "directly over the owls." in that case, it's just PM every 10 stitches :)

I ended up placing the marker at the very beginning of the round (instead of the k4 first) and then placed a marker every 10 stitches.

I have 6 owls in my hat, 60 stitches, so the markers should be placed every 10 stitches, if the intention was to have the decreases start in the middle of each owl

Thanks for the adorable pattern. I just finished it and the sleep sack! So cute!

Hi,
Is there an error in this owlie hat pattern? It says : "R3: *P1, C4B, C4F, P1 repeat from * to end"
however for the sleep sack it says: Round 2: P1, *P2, C4F, C4B, P2 repeat from * to end

Thanks!

I agree with Sueanno. Mine worked out to keep the original pm and then add one every 10 until I made it back around. Each of my pms are right down the center of the owl. Thanks Sueanno! Loved this pattern, great to learn and not feel overwhelmed!

Hi, Teresa,

Amy noticed the cable patten was reversed on the sack.

I just made the hat first as a new knitter following the C4B, C4F pattern. Should I just do the same on the sack so it will match?

RE Elizabeth,Sueanno & Emily:
What do I do after the "knit 1" stockingnette in the hat pattern?
Thank you

If I do this with #6 circulars, how many should I cast on for a newborn size?

I just completed the owlie hat, and it came out fantastic. In your pic of the hat, there are matching booties. I cannot find the pattern for them and would love to make them to compliment the hat. Can you tell me where I can find the pattern w/matching owls? Thanks so much.

I am a doorknob. Please excuse my multiple postings. I did not see the response at the top of the Blogger screen saying my comment was saved - even though I was LOOKING for such a response. Thanks, again for your cute pattern. -Pat

Hi Teresa, love love all your patterns easy to follow and they look great. I have finished the Owl cocoon and hat for a friend who is pregnant but I want to make a little owl hat for my niece who has just turned 1. If I double the cast on, 40 stitches do you think this might fit a 1year old? Thanks xxx

Hi Teresa, thank you so much for your free owl pattern, they are so cute and so simple to knit thanks to your wonderful ability to write very easy patterns!! I have just finished the cocoon and hat for a friend and I want to make a owl hat for my little niece who just turned one. If I double the cast on 40 stitches would that fit a 1 year old? Thanks Alex

I think doubling would be too much. There is no standard when it comes to head size. Do you have anyway to measure the child's head?

The only thing to keep in mind is that you need to add stitches in increments of 10 for the owls OR you can add an extra stitch between the owls, but of course that slightly changes the way it looks because the space between the owls is larger.

Hi Teresa,
I am making the sleep sack and was planning to make the matching hat. You have US7 needles for the sack and US8 for the hat. Did you use different yarns? Or is the pattern just a little bigger for the hat?
Thanks!

Since this adorable pattern is in a count of 10, I am going to increase to 80 for an adult size and after the owl pattern, instead of knitting for 1", I will knit for 2-3" I want 6-1/2" from cast on edge before I start decreasing.

Since this adorable pattern is in 10s, I am going to increase the stitch count to 80. After the cabling is finished I am going to knit all around for an additional 2-3 inches (instead of 1") so that I have 6-61/2" from cast on edge before beginning decrease. This should make an adult cap. I plan on trying it for my fav charity: Knots of Love.

Hi Teresa!

I just discovered this ever-so-cute pattern and would like to knit one for my daughter's friend who is 19 and loves owls. How many pattern repeats/stitches would you suggest I add to increase the size for an adult head?

Thank you!

Susan

Thanks!

Teresa, I apologize if you're getting this comment more than once. I can't tell if the posts are transmitting or not.

I'd like to make this hat for my daughter's friend who loves owls. Would you have a suggestion for how many pattern repeats I'd need to add for it to fit an adult head?

Thank you!

I love these owls! I added button holes at the top to run a chain of yarn through so you can snug it under baby's arms. I love your pattern, I used it as a guide and added herringbone pattern to the body of the sleep sack. I tried to attach a picture but no go. Thank you for posting this pattern, such an inspiration!

Should I be changing the pattern ?? There is so many comments.
Thank you very much. I just love the sack, I'm doing it for my grandchild in the making :-)

This is a great pattern but after reading the comments I'm thinking the pattern has errors in it? Does anyone have a corrected pattern published?

Thanks!

I'm late to the party (as usual!) but wanted to point out that the owlie sack was knitted on size 7 needles, and the hat calls for size 8 as written. maybe it's just the yarn I used, but I didn't care for the difference in the stitch appearance between the two items. I ended up knitting a 2nd hat using the size 7s and am much happier with the set. as always, your mileage may vary,
