Owlie Sleep Sack

Every new little one needs to cuddle up and be warm. Everyone knows a happy baby is made by snuggling and swaddling in some comfy single ply merino.

Below is a pattern for a sleep sack with owlies on the top.

Simple enough really.

This is one size. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE SLEPT IN. Never leave your baby unattended in a sleep sack.

The matching hat can also be found on this blog.

DETAILS
Gauge 5 spi
Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted
Size 7 needles 16" circs and DPNs (or needed for gauge)

ABBREVIATIONS
c4f is when you will place the first two stitches onto a cable needle and hold them to the front, knit the next two then knit the two from the cable needle.

c4b the same thing except hold the cable to the back.

pm: place marker

sm: slip marker

ssk: slip, slip knit is a decrease

PATTERN
CO 86
Join for knitting in the round placing marker. Bind off first stitch to close gap. 85 sts

Knit in stockinette for 16 rows

Owl Cable:

Round 1: P1, *P2, K8, P2 repeat from * to end
Round 2: P1, *P2, C4F, C4B, P2 repeat from * to end
Round 3 - 6: P1, *p2, K8, P2 repeat from * to end
Round 7: Same as round 2
Round 8-15: Same as round 1
Round 16: Same as round 2
Round 17: P1, *P4, K4, P4 repeat from * to end
Round 18: Knit

Continue knitting in stockinette until sack measures 12" from tip of rolled edge. Do NOT flatten rolled edge for measuring purposes.

Setting up the decreases:

Move marker back one stitch (I suggest making this a different color to keep track of beginning.) *Knit 17, PM repeat from * to end, knit to last two stitches before first marker

Decreases start TWO stitches before marker.

Round 1: *K2Tog, SM, SSK, knit to two stitches before next marker and repeat from *

Round 2: Knit

Repeat the above rounds until there are three stitches between each marker.

Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches.

Weave in ends, block and snuggle.

BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK to open up your owls. Adding button eyes is not recommended as it presents a chocking hazard.

There are some abbreviations that I am not familiar with in this pattern: C4F, C4B, PM, SM, SSK

Also, can you give any finished dimensions? or yards or ounces of yarn required?

thank you,

I am knitting this and love it so far (50%) done. While knitting I think that I came across a mistake in the directions? In owl cablework it says- Round 2: P1, *P2, C4F, C4B, P1 repeat from * top end.

I *think* the mistake is that after C4B it should be P2, not P1 as indicated?

I knit the owl cables with the P2 in Round 2 and it turned out beautiful.

Thank you and I am sorry if I am the one that made the mistake.

teresa cole said...

Your right, Jamie! Thanks for pointing that out! I'll fix it now.

teresa cole said...

Please note: Yardage estimates in comments is wrong. It should be 150-200 yards.

Where can I find the pattern for the matching hat? I am halfway through the sack and love it.
Thank you.

Where can I find the pattern for the hat that matches the sack?

teresa cole said...

Its actually very simple. Click on my "Super Natural Stripes Beanie" pattern. Knit that in the smallest size replacing the stripes with the exact owl pattern from the sleep sack. I don't remember, but you probably need to fiddle with the number of purls between some of the owls, because the owls are done in multiples of 8 for the owl itself, plus the purl rows. I think I had to have some of the purls have different counts, if that makes sense at all.

I was wondering why you say not to let a baby sleep in the sleep sack all night, isn't that what is for, so baby doesn't get uncovered during the night?

teresa cole said...

I don't recommend sleeping in them as there is no way to prevent a baby from wiggling down in to the sack and suffocating. Just as doctors recommend not using blankets for the first year for the same fear.

The sleep sacks made for sleeping usually have sleeves or are tied under the arms to prevent the baby from going down into the sack. I know when my girl, Hollis, was fresh out of the oven a couple of weeks ago, the sleep sack easily came up over her head.

Now that she is larger, I will let her sleep in it attended. But I still do not risk her wiggling down into it and it covering her face.

Hope that helps.

This is the cutest little thing. I knit it up this weekend using Berroco Touche' and a size 6 needle. The gauge wasn't exact, but it seems like it is large enough around. I used just over 200 yards. It feels quite heavy but oh so soft. This was my first cabling project. Your instructions were easy to follow and I now feel much more confident with the idea of doing cables...hooray! Thanks for such a great little pattern. It is in my pattern list for upcoming baby events, if there are any!

Unknown said...

How do I modify the owls to do them bottom up for the little hat? Can you literally reverse the pattern?

teresa cole said...

I posted a pattern for the hat on my blog!

Is there any way to beg someone to make a short video to show how to do the C4F and C4B as I just can not picture it?

teresa cole said...

There are videos via YouTube.

Here is one.

If you google cables, there is a wealth of information. I, unfortunately, do not have that capability.

I've made the pattern and I love it. I'm making the sack and hat for my to-be-born grandson. The sack worked up to 14.5 inches long without rolling up the edge. Should it be longer? It's a long time since I've been around a newborn.

teresa cole said...

Sounds about right. The length is only suppose to up to the underarms, but remember they are really all balled up at first, knees pulled up so they fit in it nicely.

Annie said...

When you say "Bind off first stitch to close gap", what kind of bind off are you using?

The pattern is beautiful, by the way!

I'm new to knitting cables but thought I understood what to do. However, I'm stumped on your round 2: P1, *P2, C4F, C4B, P2 repeat from * to end. What do I do here? I know I purl 2, slip 4 stitches onto a cable needle at the front of the knitting, slip 4 stitches onto a cable needle to the back of the knitting but then what? Please help!

teresa cole said...

Sorry, I meant to put the abbreviations on the top of the pattern and forgot.

The cables are actually basic 2x2 cables. You slip to the the cable need front and knit the next two, the knit the cable stitches. Same for the back.

This is my first cable project and I have a question about reading the pattern. The repeats have me a little confused... for example in round 1 (*P2, K8, P2) translates to P2, K8, P2, P2, K8, P2, P2, K8, P2 and so on until the end of the row-- in other words, I'm actually purling 4 stitches in a row (P2 twice). Or am I reading that wrong? Am I actually doing P2, K8, P2, K8, P2, K8 etc? Sorry for the newbie question. I hope you can help! Thank you. :-)

teresa cole said...

You have it right! You will be purling 4 in a row!

I can't wait to start this project for my son on the way! Sorry if I missed it above, but how many skeins of the Malabrigo Worsted will I need to purchase?

teresa cole said...

For just the sleep sack, you will only need one skein. I was able to almost complete the hat as well with the same skein. I needed about 30 yards from a second skein to finish the hat.

This is adorable! I started the project this weekend and am through the cables, onto the stockinette stitch section. It seems small, despite knitting to gage. Babe will fit inside, but I'm sure it will be stretched and not as pictured. I'm wondering if the baby pictured was very small? I'm just deciding if I want to rip out what I have and add an extra owl cable repeat. Thanks! Such a cute pattern!

Is there an error on row 17? To make mine look like the picture, this is what I did on that row:

p1, p4, *k4, p8, repeat from * to end of row.

Just finished! I love it, but have not blocked many projects. What technique would you suggest for this?

Lesley

teresa cole said...

Lesley,

Get the sleep sack nice in wet by dunking it in a sink full of cool water.

Then press out the excess water. Roll the sleep sack in a towel to get the rest of the extra water out. Then lay it flat on a table, shape it and let it dry.

I also pin down some things on the foam kids mats.

My brother is expecting his first child in Oct., and this is the PERFECT pattern for me to knit as a gift. I am ready to finish the sleep sack but have run into a problem. I still have 85 sts on my needles, but I end up having an extra st when I follow the K2Tog, SM, SSK repeition and don't know if I'm understanding the pattern correctly to decrease. The pattern refers to the "last 2 sts before the first marker." Which marker is this? The one I placed to indicate the beginning of the round or the one that was placed one st back to start setting up the decreases? Your help is greatly appreciated!!

Tiara said...

My question involves the decreasing.

When you get to the end of round one, do you knit2tog for the last two stitches or knit them separately? As for round 2, do you knit all the way around or do you knit to the last two stitches and k2tog?

When I got to the end of the pattern and finished my decreases, the "decrease line" where the last stitch & first stitch of my rounds met was very loose and I'm not sure if it's because I didn't do the decreases right...

NurseJulie said...

Another question about the blocking. WHen you say "block to open up your owls", does that mean to "open up their eyes"? Or does blocking make the owls themselves pop out more somehow?

It turned out really cute, but I have to tell people that the owls are owls so anything I can do to make them more "owly" would be great.

THanks!

Also, am I suppose to have 8 sts left? I would really like to finish this project before Christmas. Thanks, Ellen

teresa cole said...

Sorry I didn't see these before Christmas. Hope you were able to finish.

For the blocking question, if you google "wet block knitting" you should be able to track down a photo tutorial. Basically, you just soak the garment in water and pin it down so that the cables open up and don't squeeze together.

As for the decreasing. Your round should start two stitches before the first marker. I indicated that this marker should be contrasting the others for clarity.

It has been a very long time since I knit this pattern. I think you have 15 sts at the end. You should have 85 stitches and you place a marker every 17 stitches. Decrease until there are three between each set.

Am I missing something? How much yarn do I buy to make this? I see that it is worsted could I use cotton?

teresa cole said...

Malabrigo is a single ply wool yarn. You need one skein for the sack. You will have extra. It averages about $11/skein. If you want the matching hat, get two skeins.

Hi, I am just a beginner knitter and am not ready for cable - can I knit this without the owls at the top? Maybe a rib? Although I like the 'roll' at the top. How would I adjust the pattern to omit the cable owls? Thank you!

teresa cole said...

Hi there....it would be easy enough to adjust. Cast on as normal and when it gets to the owls, just ignore it and knit to the final length of the garment.

Comfort Wool,
I've just put the Owlie Sleep Sack in my charity file for children who are born into our local hospital and will most likely go home wrapped in the hospital blanket.

Growing up knitting and crocheting, I've accumulated a large stash over the years. When my mom, and later my dad, passed I was the recipient of the combined stashes of the two. Yes, my father crocheted. His favorite thing to make was always something for babies. And, when he got to the end of his days and no longer could remember how to read a pattern or even how to work the stitches, he continued making baby blankets with his own basic dc. He'd sometimes forget and do a few stitches in another stitch and not realize it till he passed back, but he didn't bother to frog. He just did a few stitches of a different height so that the new row would be straight across.

One day, I'll have to do a write up and video on how he fixed an item when he was on the outside of a large round project and realized his mistake was closer to the center and made all the difference on his stitch count.

Oh, but now I'm getting into memories that I wish everybody could hop into my head and watch a video clip of. LOL

The reason I started this comment is because I love the little owl hat that matches the owlie sleep sack. Do you have that pattern somewhere and I've just overlooked it? It would be wonderful to have a set to pass on to a new mamma, for her little one.
